MRSA screening - Our pledge to you

As Sheffield’s commissioner of NHS health services we are absolutely committed to bringing down MRSA and other healthcare associated infections.

Our pledge to you is that from April 1 2009 all planned admissions into the city’s NHS services will be routinely screened for MRSA. This will apply to all patients except for some specific patient groups identified by the Department of Health.

It’s our duty to make sure that all the NHS healthcare providers in the city – which includes the hospitals and community services - have safe and clean environments. We have tough monitoring checks in place with them to make sure this happens.

These checks have already helped to make sure that Sheffield’s NHS services are doing really well in the fight to continually bring down the levels of MRSA and healthcare associated infections. And we are committed to working with the hospitals and community services to continue to improve them.

Sheffield Primary Care Trust – which leads on providing NHS community services in the city and is a part of NHS Sheffield – has put a MRSA screening protocol in place for its foot, ankle and lower leg (podiatric) surgery.

It makes the promise that before being admitted for a planned podiatric operation, patients will be screened. You can download the protocol below to find out more.

I know that MRSA and healthcare infections are a concern for Sheffield people – which is why we are making this pledge to you. But let me also reassure you - we are already doing very well in Sheffield and we plan to get even better.

If you want to speak to someone about infections then speak to our infection control team – they are happy to help.

Jan Sobieraj

Chief Executive, NHS Sheffield
