About Sheffield

With a population of more than half a million people Sheffield is England's fourth largest city, with the wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible.

Sheffield is the country's greenest city, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. The Peak District National Park is located just 5 miles from the city centre. Here you can enjoy the beautiful, dramatic views which make it an ideal location for walking, cycling and climbing.

The two universities, Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam, offer a wide range of courses to over 40,000 students, which has a great impact on the quality of the culture and nightlife available. Sheffield has an array of restaurants, bars and clubs. It is bursting with culture and entertainment and is home to the largest regional theatre complex outside London.  The city boasts excellent shopping facilities both in the city centre and at the Meadowhall shopping centre, situated on the edge of the city by the M1.

Sheffield is the first National “City of Sport”. When the 1991 World Student Games were hosted in Sheffield it lead to a growth in the number and quality of sports facilities all over the city. You can now sample anything from dry slope skiing at Europe’s largest dry ski centre to swimming in the Olympic sized pool at Pond Forge.
