Visiting the clinic

Do I need to bring anything with me?

If it is your first visit, it would be helpful if you brought your NHS number with you. If you are coming in for a smear test, please bring your re-call letter with you.

What will happen when I arrive?

You will be welcomed by one of our reception team who will take your name (please tell us what you wish us to call you) and any other necessary details, then ask you to take a seat and wait for your name to be called.

What can I do if the receptionist asks me questions that I find difficult to answer in the waiting room?

If you feel uncomfortable at any time, you can ask the receptionist to find somewhere more private to talk to her, or tell the receptionist that you would rather give your details to the doctor or nurse who sees you.

How long will I have to wait before being called?

If you have an appointment, we expect to call you within 10-15 minutes. Please note that other people may arrive after you and be seen before you because there are usually different clinics being held at the same time – you will be seen in appointment order for your clinic. If you come to a Drop-In clinic or Youth Clinic, we expect that you will have to wait longer. It is difficult for us to estimate how long you will have to wait, as this depends on how many people decide to Drop In on any particular day. We know that the Drop-In sessions and Youth Clinic sometimes get very busy and we are sorry if you have to wait a long time.

Can I be sure the service is confidential?

All the information in your notes, on the computer, and the discussions you have with us are strictly confidential. The receptionist will ask you whether you are happy for us to send correspondence to your home address or your GP, and if you would prefer us not to do this and we need to contact you for any reason, then a doctor or nurse will discuss alternative ways of getting in touch. Our clinics are involved in audit to maintain the quality of our services. We may need to use your notes as part of these projects. All information used is anonymous. If you have any concerns about this please talk to a member of staff.

What happens when my name is called?

A doctor or nurse will show you into a private room to discuss why you have visited the clinic. They will also ask you questions about your medical history, and may take your blood pressure and weigh you.
