NHS Sheffield Dental Referral Protocols

NHS Sheffield has developed a handbook of referral protocols to support dentists when referring their patients to Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and Sheffield Salaried Primary Dental Care Service. The handbook contains background information on making referrals in Sheffield, referral criteria and referral forms.  This handbook has been developed in conjunction with clinical leads, local GDPs, the Sheffield Local Dental Committee and a patient representative. The handbook brings together existing protocols but also includes some new protocols, most notably a new procedure for referrals for endodontics and a revised procedure for suspected malignancy (see below).
The full handbook and each of the referral forms is available to download below.
All dental referrals should now be made based on the criteria contained within the handbook.  Referrals that do not meet the criteria will be returned to the referring practitioner.

Revised procedure for suspected malignancy

Please note that referrals for suspected malignancy should be made on the two week wait referral form (appendix 2 of the handbook) and should now be faxed directly to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: 0114 271 7836.
