NHS celebrates award winning pharmacies serving Sheffield people

17th November 2009

NHS Sheffield has scooped the top spot in the health sector’s Acorn Alliance Awards for ‘pharmaceutical services commissioning’.

NHS Sheffield were successful in winning the award for their ‘commitment to commissioning high quality pharmaceutical services, which meet patients’ needs, at times and locations that are convenient to them’.

The award demonstrates that people in the city are receiving a fantastic service from their pharmacists, who offer an extensive range of high quality services, including support for stopping smoking, treatment for minor ailments and extended opening hours, amongst others.

NHS Sheffield’s Head of Medicines Management, Dr Peter Magirr, said: “Providing fantastic pharmacy services for the people of Sheffield has been a key priority of NHS Sheffield for some time.

“Our submission was designed to show how the NHS can work with partners and stakeholders to effectively commission a portfolio of pharmacy services that patients and healthcare professionals’ value. Our award win recognises that we’re ahead of the game with this approach and reaffirms the value that our work has for patients.

“Over 52,000 patients in Sheffield used their community pharmacy for a minor complaint last year without needing to make an appointment with their GP - this is great news for the health of everyone in Sheffield as it frees up the GPs to see the patients who really need their help, and helps ensure that the city’s healthcare system is working as it is intended.”
