The UK’s leading health management journal has today (Thursday 12 August 2010) named NHS Sheffield fourth in its national commissioning league table.
Health Service Journal compared 151 primary care trusts in the country against national world class commissioning criteria as well as how well they had performed managing money, strategy and their Board arrangements.
The scores measure progress towards achieving better health outcomes for their populations. Sheffield’s results are an improvement on its HSJ ranking of 28th last year.
A further table, which uses a different calculation method giving all components of the assurance process equal weight, puts Sheffield second.
The world class commissioning scores evaluate performance including how NHS Sheffield:
Chief executive, Jan Sobieraj, said: “Last year we were ranked among the best but this year’s analysis shows we are in the very best. It’s a remarkable achievement and I am very proud of the team at NHS Sheffield who have worked above and beyond what was asked of them. Our fantastic progress is set against a backdrop of even tougher standards, reducing our management costs and all with no external consultant support.
“This external recognition means that Sheffield people can be absolutely assured that the care and treatment they receive involves them in the decision making, is tailored to their needs and is value for money.
"The assessment panel said we are a strong PCT, with good capability in virtually every domain. Over the past 18 months we have developed our analytical competence and turned this into better decision-making. They also said that NHS Sheffield has a relentless focus on delivery what was particularly impressive is how the PCT has responded to the financial context.
“The WCC scores demonstrate that excellent commissioning skills are in abundance in Sheffield and these will have a part to play in the new commissioning system set out in the Department of Health White Paper; Equity and excellence; Liberating the NHS.”
