Calls from young people in High Green for a new meeting place have been answered by a partnership of local organisations, as a youth shelter opens in the area.
A consultation with young people and local councillors, started by Friends of Chapeltown and High Green Parks, has led to the opening of the shelter in Mortomley Park.
NHS Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield Homes, Ecclesfield Parish Council, the Parks and Countryside team and the North Area Panel at Sheffield City Council, teamed up to provide nearly £10,000 of funding for the shelter.
It will provide young people with way of accessing support from youth workers, a link with the Safer Neighbourhood Team and contribute towards a positive relationship with the police.
The design and positioning of the shelter was also informed by the views of young people in the area in the hope that it will encourage a sense of ownership and respect.
Stella Mekonnen, NHS Sheffield Health Improvement Lead for the High Green area, said: “It’s fantastic to see something that young people have asked for become a reality for them.
“It’s a vital part of our work in health promotion, to encourage a youth voice in the area and support their sense of identity and social well-being. This is an excellent example of partnership working in a way that benefits the whole community.”
Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet member for Climate Change and Local Environment added: “The new youth shelter is a great facility for the young people of the area. It’s important to have somewhere safe for them to go in their spare time and I’m sure it will be well used, as it’s something they particularly asked for.”
Cllr Trevor Bagshaw, West Ecclesfield councillor, said: "My colleagues and I were delighted to help deliver this project. Developing and improving services and facilities for our young people in the area is a priority for us.”
