With GP practices closed over weekends and Bank Holidays, you may need to know where to go and what to do if you get sick over the festive season.

Pharmacists across the city are able to offer expert confidential advice on treating everyday ailments, emergency contraception*, which medicine to take, or general advice on where to go for help and many in Sheffield will be open over the Bank Holidays, with some open on Christmas and New Year’s Day. For a full list of pharmacy opening times please see: http://www.sheffield.nhs.uk/winter/index.php

For general health information you can call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 but if you require information, advice or treatment of minor illnesses, visit the Walk in Centre on Broad Lane, which provides a drop in service between 8am to 10pm, every day of the year, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Minor Injuries Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital also provides an 8am- 8pm drop-in service for treatment of minor injuries.

Dr Richard Oliver, Joint Clinical Director, said

“During winter, more people get ill than at other times of the year. To make it easier for your body to resist infection and fight off winter bugs the best thing you can do is eat well, exercise & sleep.

“Regularly washing your hands with soap and water will help you to avoid flu and other infections such as Norovirus which is the winter vomiting bug. But most importantly if you are ill, stay at home and rest.

“However if an illness can’t be treated at home it is important people know the most appropriate service to use over the Christmas period and when and how to access it.”

For critical or life threatening situations call 999 or visit Accident and Emergency (A&E) at Northern General Hospital (adults only) on Herries Road or A&E at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Western Bank (children only) and for dental emergencies, out of normal dental practice hours, contact 0844 736 8440.
