Margaret had a bad fall at home after her dog jumped through her walking frame. Laid on the floor unable to get up she pressed the alarm around her neck, which connected her to Sheffield’s City Wide Alarm service. They contacted the emergency services straight away and a paramedic was with her in minutes - followed shortly by an ambulance, which took Margaret to the Accident & Emergency department at the Northern General Hospital.
Margaret was treated for fractures to her pelvis and stayed in the Northern General for a few weeks, and was then transferred to the new Beech Hill Rehabilitation Centre.
At Beech Hill Margaret was given help to begin the slow process of recovery to help her walk again. With support, Margaret began moving her feet, ankles and eventually her legs. Then with the aid of a walking frame, Margaret gradually began to walk again and was able to get out of the wheelchair that she’d been in for months. The privacy of having her own room at Beech Hill was something that Margaret appreciated, however she looked forward to returning home.
After 8 weeks in Beech Hill, Margaret got her wish to return home – although she was a little apprehensive about going back. Transport was arranged for her to go back home, where she received support from carers at Sheffield City Council’s Care4You service and help to remain independent in her own home.
