What is Intermediate Care?Intermediate Care provides intensive short term care for people that have experienced a recent period of ill health and require additional support to help improve their condition.
Support is provided from a few days, up to several weeks and focuses on helping people to improve their ability to carry out normal daily tasks again such as washing and dressing and to regain some of their independence or adapt to any limitations they may have, for example following a stroke.
Patients that are unable to manage at home and require more intensive support may be referred to a 24 hour, in-patient facility where they will stay over night.
Patients that can be left for periods of time to manage on their own may be referred to the Community Intermediate Care Service (CICS) to provide treatment and support at home
Patients that require less intensive treatment may be referred to attend a day care centre at either the Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) if they live in the south of the city or the Day Rehabilitation Unit if they live in the north.
