In order to make use of the services the following steps should be followed:
There are differences in when surgeries are open and which out of hours service they use.
If you are not automatically transferred follow the instructions on the answer phone message.
These are entered on to a computer record and the details passed to a Nurse or Doctor as appropriate.
If the patient's condition deteriorates significantly please ring again. The Nurse/Doctor will call the patient to discuss the problem and agree the necessary action.
Many problems are resolved through telephone advice from the Nurse/Doctor. This can include the issuing of a prescription for collection by the patient from a local chemist.
Some patients will be invited to attend a Primary Care Centre, where they will see a Nurse or Doctor. Patients attending the Centre are expected to organise their own transport, but where this is impossible, transport can be provided.

If a Nurse/Doctor decides that a home visit is necessary, one of the GPs working for the Out of Hourse service will travel to the patient's home.
