Appraisal is a formative and developmental process designed to identify development needs rather than performance management. It is a confidential, peer led, positive process, giving GPs the opportunity to reflect on their work and consider how their effectiveness might be improved. The process is supportive, developmental and enables a GP to effectively prioritise their continued professional development.
The content of appraisal is based on the General Medical Council’s core headings set out in the ‘Good Medical Practice’ document.
Standardised documentation will ensure that information from a variety of NHS employers is recorded and expressed consistently. Appraisal will provide a regular, structured system for recording progress and identifying development needs to support individual GPs in achieving validation.
GP Appraisal is underpinned by the PCT’s GP Appraisal Policy. A comprehensive database has also been designed to support the management of the process. Approximately 500 GPs are now annually appraised.
The details we hold for all GPs are those registered on the Medical Performers List held by Sue Whitham at Brincliffe House ( Tel: 30 51853). Should any of these details change it is essential that GPs contact Sue immediately in order to ensure the central database is kept up to date.
