We understand our obligations under the General Duties of the Single Equality Duty and the Equality Act to:
We discharge these duties through a range of activity within NHS Sheffield in addition to actions within our Single Equality Scheme.
The following gives some examples of this varied work:
1. Through active membership of partnership boards
All of the above have senior manager membership and work on a range of issues relating to social inclusion and inequality aimed at reducing discrimination and if identified, harassment. Harassment has been raised as a priority issue for 2010/11 through some of this partnership work.
2. Through active consultation and engagement with community groups on a range of service redesigns, and through a range of communication and public awareness campaigns, including Patient Stories, life size cardboard cut outs of disabled people promoting their inclusion and engagement.
3. Through public health programmes specifically aimed at addressing inequality, such as Enhanced Public Health Programmes; Health Champions; Pacesetters which target many of the protected characteristic groups.
4. Through commissioning voluntary sector and user led organisations to deliver a wide range of activities for NHS Sheffield, including advocacy and information services.
5. Through our commissioning activities with other health providers, based on Equality Impact Assessments and other assessment of demographic health data. This includes service design, procurement and contract monitoring.
