We’ve had lots of conversations with patients and the public about NHS walk-in services in Sheffield city centre and they all say the same thing. That they are confused about what’s on offer and where they are located.
We want to create a simple, convenient and easy to access minor illness and injury centre in one place at Broad Lane. The accident and emergency departments for adults and children are not a part of this consultation and will continue as normal.
On Tuesday 6th July 2010, NHS Sheffield Board considered a recommendation that the Walk in Centre and the Minor Injuries Unit, both at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, should be replaced by a comprehensive new service for both adults and children, to be based at the Broad Lane Centre. The services would be aligned with the existing 8am to 8pm walk-in GP service at the Broad Lane site.
The recommendation was approved in principle. The Board also asked to see further detail on the proposed changes to ensure that unplanned consequences for individual patients, and for the emergency care system as a whole, will be avoided. The detailed work will include ensuring that patients know where to attend for the best treatment. The Board is expecting to receive a further report when it meets in September and hopes to begin the new service in Spring 2011.
Following discussion about this consultation by the NHS Sheffield Board, we can now let you know how we plan to take things forward. We proposed to create a new urgent but non emergency service based at our existing health premises at Broad Lane S1, which would be for adults and children and have equipment to quickly diagnose problems. This would mean people could be seen and treated for both minor illness and minor injuries in one place.
The public consultation produced an overwhelming response in favour with 81% of those responding saying they agreed with our proposals. We did however receive differing views from both Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Hospital. You can find the full consultation results in our February Board Paper (201kb pdf, opens in a new window)
We believe that simple, convenient and easy to access walk in services in the city centre will help the people of Sheffield to choose the right service for their needs. We are going to assess the impact our proposals may have and evaluate a number of service models before making a recommendation to our Board. We will be taking a further paper to our March Board which will set out the evaluation criteria we will be using. We will also continue to discuss our proposals with key stakeholders.
We will let you know, later in the year, when our Board have made a decision on our reconfiguration proposals. In the meantime, if you have any questions about our proposals please contact Jeanette Miller on 0114 3051144 or email: jeanette.miller2@nhs.net
