NHS Summary Care Records

NHS Summary Care Records (SCRs) are new electronic summaries of patients' vital health information, they will be available to authorised NHS staff providing you with care anywhere in England to help them make key care decisions.

SCRs contain details of patients' current medications, allergies and any reactions to medication.

Patients will be able to access their Summary Care Record using the secure website HealthSpace. More details about what is happening and why, and links to other useful information can be found on the NHS Care Records Service website.

What's happening in Sheffield

During the early part of 2010, letters were sent to patients to ask whether or not they wished to have a summary care record created. Patients who have registered with a practice since the letters were sent should have been given the choice as part of the registration process.

Summary Records are now being created, practice by practice, with 50% of patients, who have agreed to have a record, having a record by 31st March 2012 and 100% by 31st March 2013. Once created, your record should not be accessed without your permission.

A small number of clinical staff now have access to the records to improve patient safety, in particular pharmacists at Sheffield Teaching Hospital to enable them to check what medication people are taking when they are admitted to ensure that any drugs prescribed in hospital do not have adverse reactions with drugs already being taken, or drugs aren’t accidentally stopped because the hospital staff did not know the patient was taking them.
