Strategy Directorate

The Strategy Directorate is responsible for translating the information identified by Public Health in the population health needs assessment into NHS Sheffield’s strategy.  This five year strategy is known as Achieving Balanced Health.

The directorate also has a role in ensuring the strategy is implemented across the city by the numerous providers of health services.  This is carried out by the development of service specifications which are detailed descriptions of the services required.  These can either be for new services, or to request changes to existing services.  These specifications then form part of the contracts we have with providers of healthcare.  It is this mechanism, together with contractual requirements on the quality of care, by which NHS Sheffield can ensure that services are delivered to the level of quality required.  This process is often referred to as “commissioning”.

Managers carry out this work, to shape the way health services are provided in the future.  Much of it is done collaboratively, with clinicians and specialists, and with patients and the public, to ensure the services are innovative and deliver quality patient care. The work of the Directorate in shaping and improving health services extends to improvement, refurbishment and in some cases replacement of primary and community care buildings, and in supporting the development of GP Consortia so that they are able to take on future responsibilities as intended by Government.
