Public Health Directorate

The discipline of public health aims to improve the health of the population through health protection (stopping people being exposed to risk), health promotion (helping people to lead healthier lifestyles) and through the organisation of health services.

The Public Health Directorate in NHS Sheffield has a critical role in the commissioning cycle in assessing health need, and so identifying what services need to be commissioned for Sheffield.  We then work closely with colleagues in other directorates to define these services, procure them, monitor that they are being provided and meeting the health needs that we initially identified.

We have identified 3 clear priorities for public health in the City. These are: addressing health inequalities through our Healthy Communities Programme, improving the health of children and young people, and tobacco control. These are all priorities within NHS Sheffield’s overall Achieving Balanced Health strategy.

In addition, the Public Health Directorate itself runs a number of public health programmes and commissions others from voluntary sector and other providers in the City.  We are also responsible for emergency planning and Sheffield's Stop Smoking Services and host the Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT).
