Practice Based Commissioning (PBC)

General practice reception

Practice Based commissioning is about involving GP practices and other health and primary care professionals in the commissioning of services. It puts clinicians at the heart of PCT commissioning and allows groups of family doctors and community clinicians to develop better services for their local communities.

NHS Sheffield has overall accountability for healthcare commissioning. However, by devolving budgets to GPs through Practice Based Commissioning, GPs and other primary care professionals are able to drive the commissioning process and design services to better meet the needs of their patients.

Working closely with partners including hospitals, local authority and voluntary organisations GPs are best placed to assess local needs and the prioritisation and design of health services to make the best possible use of resources available to them.

Most GP practices in Sheffield have joined with their neighbouring practices to form consortia. There are 4 consortia in Sheffield:
